New Years Eve at the Harbour

Hey everyone,
Just a very short note to say 'Happy New Year' to you all and to post a note and some Sydney New Year photos.
As the pictures testify, the day was good fun and the fireworks were amazing.....even though we did camp out all day for the privelege. There ended up being around 20-25 of us located at Dawes Point right between the harbour bridge and the opera house. Two shows of fireworks entertained us. One at around 9pm and then obviously the main event at midnight. We drank lots and ate even more.....once again.....as the pictures testify. We hope you enjoy and have a giggle.
Anyway, that's all for now as we have to go pack because we fly to Melbourne for 3 weeks tomorrow.

More soon

Love to all

Christmas in Sydney

Hello everyone

We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and are now gearing up for the New Year celebrations. We are already getting ready for a big New Year's Eve party in Sydney harbour and have picked out a spot right under the bridge, adjacent to the opera house. Think we will need to arrive by about midday to ensure we get a good position though as the whole place is likely to be packed to the rafters.
Anyway, that's enough about New Year for now. Christmas has come and gone in the blinking of an eye. The build up was very very strange, light nights, warm sunny days and a distinct palpable lack of normal festive cheer. Aussies certainly seem to do the Christmas thing in a rather more low key manner than us Poms. Even the shops seemed quiet on Christmas Eve.
We knew Christmas Day would be very different for us and it certainly proved that way. The weather was bright and I spent part of the morning swimming in the rooftop pool at our city apartment. Fiona ( her mother's daughter ) was cracking on with preparations for a wonderful Christmas dinner.....turkey and ALL the trimmings. Different maybe...but some things simply have to remain normal. After a few hours slaving in the kitchen, the feast was ready and I must say.....mum, Teresa.....I think she actually exceded all Christmas dinners past. No longer just comis chef in charge of fancy starters but now she would give Delia and that bloke Ramsey a run for their money. That said the seafood starter was fantastic.....I can actually lay claim to placing the prawns in the very decorative manner you see in the picture above....but that's about where my role ended!!! With full tummy's and the usual collection of trashy Christmas telly on the box, we chilled for the remainder of the day and played with Christmas pressies from each other and from home. The 'putting on as many pairs of socks as possible' game, proved to be most entertaining as the pictures testify.
It was wonderful to speak to loved ones and family back home and although we missed everyone loads, we were happy knowing that back home Christmas seemed to retain its usual flavour. We certainly hope that you all had a lovely day too.
Boxing Day was a more sociable day and we went down to the harbour for the start of the Sydney to Hobart annual yacht race. We proceded to sit in the sun ( Fiona in the shade ) for a full two hours waiting for the boats to dash past only to discover the race began from the next bay up the harbour.....doh!!!! Anyhow, we had been joined by Matt, Jo, Lucy and Sophie and more friends and proceded to party back at our apartment for the remainder of the day. Wine flowed and the usual assortment of charades, triv and karaoke silly games ensued and before we knew it, it was approaching midnight and the girls were dashing to catch the last ferry back to Manly. A really fun day...always did prefer Boxing Day!!!!
Since then, the sun has continued to shine and we have ventured to the sales and picked up a few bargains...I even considered the purchase of an Australian cricket shirt. It was in the sale but I physically couldn't allow myself to do it. Fiona was disgusted that I even thought about it, telling me I had no patriotism and basically blaming me and my treason for England's sad demise. We have also sat at Circular Quay by the bridge watching the cricket on a giant screen in the park. Long day's in the sun.....and shade!!!
Anyway, we should sign off now as we are heading for more cricket in the park....England currently batting, so should prove entertaining!
Enjoy the rest of the season's festivities and have a wonderful New Year
We hope you enjoy the pictures

All our love

New apartment and a weird weekend

Well, we have now moved into our new apartment overlooking Manly and Shelley Beaches (see photo). Its a little smaller than our last place and slightly less plush but still more than homely and comfortable and it has beautiful sunrise views over the ocean. We are only here till Saturday and then its into the city and Saville 2 Bond St. Apartments (sounds almost regal doesn't it).
We have just had an interesting weekend at Shari's - the woman from the letting agency. As I think we said before, she's lovely if not a little nuts!!! Pretty sure she's a functioning alcoholic and complete fruit cake. Sometimes manic, sometimes manic depressive. She rents a big place in Manly and its how shall we put it....a work in progress!!! Only a few cockroach incidents and then there was the falling through the bed at half two in the morning and oh yes the flooding of the kitchen when the guy living upstairs kept his bath running about half an hour too long. Lots more other hilarious stories to tell including one of candles and frogs in the bedroom.
Anyhow on the plus side, we did meet a couple of girls who were also staying at chateau Shari. Lucy and Sophie, travelling for a year and seem really nice. Had a few drinks and laughs with them last night. Don't think they wanted to go back to Shari's.
We have just had breakfast out as its Fiona's birthday. Lovely place on the beach. We indulged in eggs, bacon, champagne cocktails etc. Well...a little treat now and then doesn't hurt and makes a change to Special bloody K that we've been living off for the past goodness knows how long. Also heading out to dinner tonight at a local Thai restaurant. Should be lovely.
Anyway, that's all for now. Just time to add that as we were walking off our breakfast along the beach we worked out that in 9 days time we will be exactly half way through our great adventure. Can't believe how fast time is flying and we are still reminding ourselves daily that we must remember to appreciate all that is around us cos it simply is.....breathtaking.....even the cockroaches over the weekend!!

We will try to update before the 25th but if not we hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and that Santa brings you all you dream of (only if you've been good mind)!!!

Love to all

Its not all sunshine and surfin ya know

Hi everyone,
Thought we'd just let you know that its been cloudy and raining for the past 24 hours here in sunkissed Manly. Thought that little detail might make you all feel a little chirpier back home. I know 24 hours of rain is no big drama but it has been pretty unseasonal here all week and according to forecasts is expected to carry on for a little while. We tend to get one day absolutely glorious and 30 degrees, the next high cloud and sunny intervals and the next overcast and chilly before returning back to hot and gorgeous again.....very odd. Only seems to be Sydney too, bloody baking non stop in Perth, Cairns and Adelaide. Melbourne a bit iffy too. Still shouldn't complain at least its not cold, frosty and damp with dark mornings and bleak evenings. There, told you we'd make you all feel better!!!!
Anyhow, not much more to say for now other than we move out of the apartment tomorrow to stay with the woman at the letting office for the weekend before moving into a new apartment on Monday. This one actually overlooks the ocean. Then its off into our city apartment by the harbour bridge and opera house on the 23rd for a week before the NYE celebrations. Can't wait. We've bought our eski (coolbox to the Brits) and are planning an al day picnic in the park by the opera house and bridge waiting for the fireworks to begin. Friends we met will maybe join us too so sure it will be a really fun day of drinking and laying in the sun....so long as it makes an appearance.
Funny I should say that, the rain has stopped and I do believe.....yes....can it be.....yes the sun is coming out again. Maybe it'll be a beach day after all!!!! Hope its not too miserable back home.
More pictures very soon

Manly Paradise

Hi all.
Just a very short update. Been in Oz a week now and can't believe how time is flying. Been having such a great time in Manly that we've not made it back into the city since we left on Thursday. Days are so relaxed. We are both seriously into a health kick right now. Every day starts with a run for me, walk for Fiona along the boardwalk a couple of times. We are usually out by about 9.30 and back by about 10.30. There are so many small cove beaches to run to. Thing is, everybody is doing the same thing!!! Young, old, male, female. It just seems to be an incredibly health conscious thing. All along the main Manly beach, school kids are being taught how to surf and having lessons and races on the beach. Everyone just seems so happy and laid back. Once back to the apartment (which now feels very homely) we have brekkie, of fresh fruit, bought from the market on the way in and yoghurt. Then its cricket till lunch.....I actually believe Fiona is more hooked than me at the moment. During the lunch break we swim in the outdoor pool at the apartment in the sun and I do a few weights. Then more cricket. I usually head for another swim early evening and then a nice walk again as the sun sets. Families are out, couples, joggers, serious runners. Its just brilliant.
Test match ends tomorrow so god only knows what we will do with our day. Maybe then we will just have to satisfy ourselves with laying on the beach for most of it.
Think we will probably get into the city at the weekend to try and sort out a booking for Christmas lunch somewhere. Still haven't got our heads round the fact we'll be away and that the sun is shining and its 28 degrees each day. Will be very strange. Also Robbie is playing Sydney Saturday and Sunday nights so may see if there are any tickets available outside the Aussie Stadium.
Anyway, brekkie is calling and the sun is shining. Will try and post more photos soon to show you a few sights of Oz.

Love to all
